Vincent The Great

Vincent The Great

Vincent etched his name into the record book with an epic New Zealand Derby win last night at Addington. (Watch Replay)

Going into the race as second favourite behind his stablemate Ultimate Machete, Vincent faced the breeze in the early stages of the race before working to the front with a lap to go.

The pace was a frantic and as the field turned off the home bend Vincent was vulnerable to Ultimate Machete coming off his back.

Ultimate Machete did come and did actually hit the front mid-stretch, however Vincent showed just how much heart he has and fought back to win.

It was an incredible performance which was made even more impressive by the time. The mile rate of 1:55.1 for the 2600 metres was a new all age New Zealand record and was 1.5 seconds quicker than that recorded by Lazarus when winning this race 12 months earlier!

For Art Major it was a triumph as not only did he sire the winner but also the third placegetter Eamon Maguire who finished the race off well.

Vincent has now won ten of his thirteen starts, including two Derbys, and has earnings of $304,446.

He was a $130,000 purchase at the APG Sydney Sale by Jean and Bill Feiss. Bred by Sloys Company Pty Ltd and sold by Pepper Tree Farm, Vincent is the fourth winner produced by the Armbro Operative mare Kept For Pleasure 1:56 - $542,343.

This is a tremendous family which continues to produces outstanding horses.
