Jilliby Jagger (Grinfromeartoear) shot to the front from barrier five and after averting some early interference, Smolda settled in the breeze.
Glen Craven, behind Jilliby Jagger, drove a race of controlled speed and ensured that all those behind him were running a long way out.
Mark Purdon never hustled Smolda as he allowed him to creep up forward on the outside of Jilliby Jagger.
Heading off the back straight the final time it was a race in two and it looked like Jilliby Jagger might have got the best of Smolda.
However a champion will never be denied and Smolda dug deep inching closer and closer before hitting the front with 100 metres to go and win by 2.3 metres.
Jilliby Jagger ran simply an enormous race to finish second and he will no doubt benefit from such a battle.
The time for the race was 1:56.8, remarkably breaking the previous race record held by non other than Courage Under Fire.
For Smolda it was his second Group One victory in a row and he will be out to make it a hat trick in the Ballarat Cup on Saturday week.
