Being able to hold up from the pole proved pivotal for Bec Bartley and the son of Mach Three.
Devendra tried desperately to cross San Carlo at the start, but while he did get up to three quarters of a length in front, he just couldn't clear.
Mid race moves came from Lennytheshark first and then Soho Tibeca to sit outside of San Carlo.
Bartley was able to control the pace during the first half of the last mile to have enough in reserve to hold off Soho Tribeca and Lennytheshark and get the win.
Covering the last half in 55.4, San Carlo scored by 1.2 metres.
Bred by Bayside Corporation, San Carlo is by Mach Three from the six time winning Classic Garry mare Bridge Player.
