After showing explosive gate speed to lead, the son of Sportswriter received no peace in front as runner after runner came up to sit in the breeze outside of him.

With the first half run in 59.1, the real pressure came at the bell when second favourite El Barcelona moved up quickly to eye ball Mitch Maguire.

Those two went to war and ran through the third quarter in 28.2. With 400 metres to travel though Mitch Maguire had fought off El Barcelona and kicked clear.

Others tried to catch him but Mitch Maguire would not be denied and he went on to win by 4.6 metres over Major Pocket (Art Major), with El Barcelona hanging on for third.

The time of 1:55.9 was sizzling. It not only smashed the previous race record by 0.6 seconds, but it also was a new Australasian record beating the previous record held by Our Waikiki Beach.

This means Mitch Maguire now holds records in both Australia and New Zealand.

A veteran of just nine starts, Mitch Maguire has now won four times and has earnings in excess of $115,633.

Bred by Ray and Diana Kennedy and is out of their Christian Cullen mare Miley Maguire.

Mitch Maguire comes from Sportswriter's smallest crop. In total his two year old crop is just 71 foals, but it includes sixteen winners, four stakes winners and two Group One winners!
