Junee harness racing trainer Bruce Harpley is unsure whether he will target the New South Wales Oaks with his talented filly Dance For Madi after an emotional victory last week.
Harpley was wiping away tears after Dance For Madi won the Phyllis Harpley Memorial at Junee on Australia Day, a race named after his mother who passed away 17 years ago.
"It was the most emotional victory of my career, not only did I win Mum's race but the family is also coming to terms with the death of my Dad Allan who passed away two weeks ago," Harpley said.
"I am half and half at the moment whether to target the NSW Oaks because there are a couple of nice Carnival Of Cups races coming up for her including the String Of Pearls at Albury in a fortnight and then Young will run an Oaks race worth $16,000 so after those races I will decide which way to go."
It wasn't the first time Harpley had won the race named in honour of his mother but was all the more special because his mother had a strong attachment to Dance For Madi's dam, Beejaykay.
"I still remember Mum being there when I won a Sires Stakes race on Beejaykay so to have a filly that the family has bred win her race was just the best."
"We are what we are because of our parents and mum raised four kids, never whinged or complained and spent plenty of time at the stables doing what needed to be done, she was just an extraordinary woman."
Dance For Madi raced 13 times last season and won more than $40,000 but Harpley is unsure whether he made the right decision to miss the Breeders Crown.
"It was interesting because I was getting sick and tired of bad draws with her in big races and then I sat down and worked out that she had covered more than 8000 kilometres travelling to and from the races as a two year old so I thought it was time to give her a rest."
