A dashing drive by ace pilot Daryl Douglas paved the way for the royally-bred Giveusagrin to break maiden ranks in the Terang Guineas this afternoon (March 4).
After enjoying the perfect trail one-out one-back, Douglas switched his mount down to the rubber pegs with 600 metres to go to track the leader and $2.60 harness racing favourite Larrikin Larry and roughie Desinda Bromac.
Shortly after Desinda Bromac started to give ground and Giveusagrin, taken to the outside again by Douglas, took aim at Larrikin Larry.
Having his third start, Giveusagrin finished powerfully down the middle of the track to triumph by 6.4 metres.
Summanus and Igetaround filled the minor placings with Larrikin Larry fourth.
Mile rate for the 2180 metres mobile was a smart 2:00.4.
A three-year-old gelding by Grinfromeartoear, Giveusagrin was bred and is owned by New South Welshman Les Camarda and prepared by Peter Manning, who combined for numerous wins with the top racemare Very Chic.
Weona Miss, the Harold Park-winning dam of Giveusagrin, has left five winners from five to race. She figures as a half-sister to Inter Dominion champion Weona Warrior, ID heat winner Weona Chief, Weona Brave, Mac's Wish and others.
Giveusagrin completed a driving double for Douglas, Victoria's winningest reinsman. Earlier in the day he partnered the Alan McDonough trained Potenza ($2.40 fav.) to a hard-fought win in the fastest time of the day - 1:59.
Bendigo horseman Gary Donaldson also chimed in with a training double in Scarlett Finn ($1.40 fav.), which he drove himself, and Crave ($2.70), handled by Leigh Sutton.
Both led throughout for clear-cut wins.
