Sunday’s two Australian Pacing Gold three-year-old finals give new meaning to term “visitor’s draw”.
Victoria’s top two juveniles from last season, Rocknrolla and Renaissance Man, both drew the extreme barrier for their respective $100,000 Group 1 finals over 1609 metres.
The Emma Stewart-trained Rocknrolla will start from gate 10 in the fillies’ final at 2pm, while Andy Gath’s Renaissance Man will start from the same alley in the colts and geldings’ decider at 3.45pm.
The saving grace for the star pair is that they are in form. Both were impressive winners of their heats at Menangle on Tuesday.
Rocknrolla resumed from a seven-month injury-enforced layoff with a hollow three-metre win in 1:57.1, while Renaissance Man sat outside For A Reason but out-toughed the star Queenslander in 1:55.2.
Adding to Kate Gath’s problems aboard Renaissance Man is that For A Reason drew beautifully in the final. He was allocated gate four, but will come into three if emergency Lombo Tattoo doesn’t get a run.
Other leading contenders Chariot King (six) and Major Bronski (nine) also drew wide, while the other Victorians engaged are Remember El (one), Bachelor Lombo (two) and Susan Hunter-trained stablemates Tsunami Sloy (five) and Its My Pleasure (eight).
Despite Rocknrolla’s barrier woes, Victoria retains a stranglehold on the fillies’ final.
The Wayne Potter-trained Morgan Abby, a 1:55.7 heat winner, drew gate two and the Hunter-trained Stunin Girl barrier five after her 1:57.1 success.
Miss Trickin Lombo (one), Gem Of Reibey (four), Modern Girl (six) and Wattabout A Smile (eight) round out Victoria’s domination of the fillies’ final.
